Before Choosing Your Epoxy Floor

Have questions about the installation process, required preparation, or maintaining your future floor? Here are answers to the questions our clients ask most often. For questions specific to your project, contact our team.

Preparation and Installation

  • How Do You Prepare Concrete Before Applying Epoxy?

The concrete must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants (oil, paint, sealant). Our team performs shot blasting or mechanical grinding to create a surface profile that allows the epoxy to bond properly. Cracks and imperfections are repaired before application. This preparation is included in our services.

  • Can Epoxy Be Applied Over an Existing Floor?

It depends on the condition of the current coating. Some coatings can serve as a base after preparation; others need to be removed completely. An on-site visit allows us to assess feasibility and determine the appropriate method. Contact us for a free assessment.

  • How Long Before You Can Use the Floor After Installation?

Cure time varies depending on the system used and environmental conditions. Generally, light foot traffic is possible after 24 to 48 hours. For vehicle or heavy machinery traffic, allow 5 to 7 days. Our team provides a precise timeline based on your project.

Coating Selection

  • What's the Difference Between Epoxy and Polyaspartic?

Epoxy is the base layer that bonds to the concrete and provides strength and durability. Polyaspartic is a type of high-performance polyurethane applied over the epoxy. It offers superior protection against UV, chemicals, and abrasion, and won't yellow over time. A system combining both delivers optimal performance for commercial spaces.

  • Quel type d'époxy choisir pour un entrepôt avec chariots élévateurs?

For heavy machinery traffic, we recommend polyaspartic or flake epoxy. These systems offer superior impact and abrasion resistance. Coating thickness is adjusted based on the expected traffic intensity. See our Commercial Epoxy Flooring page for more details.

  • Is Metallic Epoxy Suitable for All Types of Businesses?

Metallic epoxy is ideal for spaces where appearance is the priority: showrooms, high-end retail, lobbies. For high-traffic industrial environments or wet zones, other systems like polyaspartic or quartz epoxy are more appropriate.

Maintenance and Durability

  • How Do You Clean a Commercial Epoxy Floor?

Regular cleaning with water and mild soap is sufficient for routine maintenance. For industrial spaces, an auto-scrubber works well. Avoid abrasive products and ammonia-based cleaners. The non-porous surface of epoxy prevents dirt from penetrating, making maintenance straightforward.

  • Can a Damaged Epoxy Floor Be Repaired?

Yes. Localized damage (chips, deep scratches) can be repaired without redoing the entire floor. The repair involves preparing the damaged area and applying a new coat of epoxy. The colour may vary slightly depending on the age of the existing floor.

  • Does Epoxy Yellow Over Time?

Standard epoxy systems may yellow slightly when exposed to UV for extended periods. For spaces with significant natural light, we recommend a system with a polyaspartic topcoat, which won't yellow under UV exposure. See our Commercial Epoxy Flooring page for available options.
